Is it Safe or Wise to use Beeswax Balm on Eczema or Psoriasis?

When I first started formulating beeswax balms in Northern Thailand well over 20 years ago, I drew on my own experience of severe childhood eczema and then spent time sitting with local herbalists and beekeepers up in the hills, learning how traditional Thai wisdom intersects with the science of natural skin healing. So when people ask me if using a natural beeswax balm like our Intensive Skin Repair Balm is safe—or even wise—for conditions like eczema and psoriasis, my answer is a resounding yes.

I’ve watched friends and customers with raw, inflamed skin go through endless cycles of harsh flare-ups, feeling like nothing could quiet the itch or the burn. When the skin barrier is compromised, it loses moisture rapidly through trans-epidermal water loss, leaving you wide open to environmental irritants and surface microbes. That is precisely where pure beeswax works its quiet magic. It forms a breathable, semi-occlusive protective shield - locking in rich hydration without clogging your pores - giving your skin the space and protection it desperately needs to repair itself.

Beyond my own experience in the product room, modern research backs up what traditional healers have known for centuries:

  • Skin Barrier & Moisture Retention: Beeswax acts as both a natural humectant and an occlusive. A comprehensive review of beeswax in dermatology highlights how it reinforces barrier integrity to calm the chronic dryness and scaling typical of psoriasis and eczema and also provides anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant benefits.
  • Anti-Inflammatory & Healing Properties: Studies published in MDPI Nutrients demonstrate that active compounds in beeswax (cera flava) help regulate local immune responses, noticeably reducing redness, skin thickness, and intense itching.
  • Natural Antimicrobial Support: Unrefined beeswax naturally retains traces of propolis and fatty acids. These possess inherent antibacterial qualities that combat surface microbes like Staphylococcus aureus—a classic trigger for eczema itch and secondary infections.

In fact, a clinical trial evaluating beeswax-based mixtures for eczema and psoriasis found that patients experienced substantial overall relief, with many able to safely reduce their reliance on topical steroids over time.

A Gentle Precaution:

While unrefined beeswax itself is wonderfully gentle and hypoallergenic, highly sensitive or flare-prone skin can sometimes react to concentrated plant botanicals or essential oils.  Be sure to reads the label carefully - while our Intensive Skin Repair Balm contains only healing vetiver oil, many other commercial products can contain highly fragrant essential oils which irritate the skin.  I always tell our community to do a simple 24-hour patch test on the inner forearm first to make sure your skin receives our gentle blend. And of course, if your skin is actively weeping, cracked wide open, or showing signs of infection, reach out to your dermatologist before introducing any new product.

Not All Beeswax Is Equal:

Not all beeswax contains the same levels of healing enzymes and phytochemicals - it depends if it is farmed beeswax or if that beeswax comes from bees who have been allowed to gather pollens in diverse natural forests.  You can read more here about the differences between them, and what that means for skin healing: Unraveling the Buzz: Natural and Farmed Beeswax Compared

Natural beeswax is a phenomenal skin healing agent in its own right - especially when it is sustainably harvested from bees who have foraged in natural jungle.  It's been used for thousands of years for all sorts of skin healing, including eczema and psoriasis.  You can learn more about that here: Beeswax: Unique Enzymes and Proteins for Healing

So, back to the basic question: Is beeswax balm safe to use on eczema or psoriasis?  Absolutely yes!  Is it wise to use beeswax balm to help calm and moisturize flare ups of eczema and psoriasis? Again, absolutely yes.
